The start of a new year, and the bidding farewell to an old one often are reflective kinds of times. And looking back over the year of 2007 it is clear that fashion and fashion accessories have taken huge steps in new directions, jumping happily from the practical and reasonable to the fanciful and luxury-filled. People were willing to take chances with fashion, to mix and match and go a little over the edge, and most are continuing to enjoy their new found freedom.
Surrealism seemed to be the key word of the day in the fashion world in 2007, especially towards the end of the year. Designers were featuring fabulous accessory items such as vivid purple heels with bright multi-colored flame relief designs on the heel, red straps and a tea cup handle on the heel, courtesy of Miu Miu. Glittering gold, dazzling gems, and flashy jewelry reigned supreme, but all that glamour came with a very hefty price tag. Consider the Bottega Ventea bag that sold for $78,000 or the unprecedented Birkins by Hermes, that were made from crocodile and pave diamonds and sold for $148,000. Or if gold is really your thing, how about a pair of C-3PO leggings from Nicolas Ghesquière's Spring '07 Balenciaga runway collection. They are truly unique and truly pricey at $158,000.
So what does this flaunting of luxury mean to those of us who can’t quite take in the posh fashion shows? Mainly, the price of fashion is on the rise even down to the ready-to-war sets. Will 2008 bring more of the same? We’ll have to keep our fingers crossed and wait to see. In the meantime, we can look back fondly over the truly odd turns in the fashion world during 2007. Diamond encrusted human skull replica, anyone?
